Why Switch?

100% Pure Water

Made with nothing but pure water. Gel packs contain petroleum-based polymers—switching prevents microplastic pollution.

Lab-Tested Performance

Our in-house R&D lab ensures precise temperature retention in real-world transport conditions.

Leak-Resistant Design

Our patented Seal Through Liquid technology locks in liquid to protect your goods and packaging.

Reducing environmental impact, one act at a time.

We’re committed to reducing harm to the environment-and that starts with you. Switching from gel ice packs to pure water cuts your carbon footprint and eliminates microplastic pollution in our earth, water ways and food sources.

Use our Carbon Calculator to see how much CO₂ you can save and how many trees it would take to offset your current gel use.

Carbon Offset Calculator

Use the slider below to select the number of gel ice pack pallets you use. The extra CO₂ produced and the trees needed to offset that CO₂ will update automatically.

Still Have Questions?

What is the difference between gel and water packs?

Gel packs are filled with a synthetic polymer gel that freezes and stays cold. While they’re effective at maintaining low temperatures, they come with a few drawbacks:

  • Not drain-safe – Gel can clog pipes and isn't suitable for disposal via sinks.

  • Difficult to recycle - Gel contamination on the outer film makes the recycling process more difficult, requiring hot or caustic washing.
  • Environmental impact – Gel contains synthetic polymers that act like microplastics as they break down over time, contributing to pollution.

Water Ice Packs (Hydropac’s alternative)
Hydropac water packs are filled with 100% pure water, sealed in recyclable LDPE film.

  • Safe to pour down the drain – It’s just water!

  • Fully food-contact safe – No chemical leaching risks.

  • Recyclable film – The outer packaging can be recycled at soft plastic recycling points.

  • Lower carbon footprint – Simpler ingredients and eco-friendly design.

Water-based packs provide reliable cooling performance with a cleaner environmental profile—ideal for businesses focused on sustainability.

Can I still use my old gel packs?

Yes, you can still use your existing gel packs, especially if they're in good condition. Reusing them is actually a great way to reduce waste in the short term. However, it's important to keep a few things in mind:

  • ♻️ Reusability: Gel packs can often be reused multiple times, especially for internal or return logistics - and so can water packs.

  • 🚫 Disposal: Be cautious when it's time to dispose of them. Gel packs are not drain-safe and should never be poured down sinks or toilets. Most contain synthetic polymers that act like microplastics. They don’t break down and can clog pipes or contribute to pollution.

  • 🚮 Difficult to recycle - Gel contamination on the outer film makes the recycling process more difficult, requiring hot or caustic washing.

If you're committed to sustainability, gradually switching to water ice packs is a smart move. They’re safe to dispose of, kinder to the planet, and still deliver the performance you need.

Are water ice packs as effective?

Yes — and in many cases, they’re more effective.

Hydropac’s water ice packs are engineered for high performance in cold chain logistics. Here’s why they hold their own (and then some):

Reliable Cooling Power
Water has a high latent heat capacity, meaning it absorbs and releases energy slowly. This gives it steady, consistent cooling, ideal for transporting fresh, chilled, or frozen goods.

Safer for Food Contact
Unlike gel packs, our water-based ice packs are made from 100% food-safe water with no polymers or chemical additives.

Many of our clients in meal prep, fresh food, pet food, and pharma have switched to water packs — and haven’t looked back.
